More than any other, the ever-broadening genre we know as Techno is
synonymous with technology and innovation, both conceptually and in method.
>From the early days of Kraftwerk or and the unabashed Futurism of early
Detroit techno, such advancement has been present within the the very fabric
of the music. In their times, the pioneers of this music were visionaries -
inspired and driven by their imagination, they would translate this into
sonics through whatever means were at their disposal - working with whatever
technology was available to them at the time.

In recent years, we have been witnessing the control of music and technology
passing from the hands of the few to the de-centralised many. One facet of
this phenomena has been the breakthroughs in digital and compressed music
technology - most notably the development of the MP3 format.

One of the most interesting applications of this technology has occurred
within the context of DJ mixing. Enabled by software and hardware developers
such as N2IT / Stanton and Native Instruments, who are responsible for the
revolutionary Final Scratch and Traktor systems, respectively, the
implications for the future of DJing are very exciting.

It is in acknowledgement of this explosion of new possibilities that
novamute has opted to release this compilation. It is becoming all the more
common for DJs to actually request promos of new material in MP3 format -
removing the need to encode tracks from traditional media.

"2CDs & MP3s" features many tracks previously available as 12" only
releases: Speedy J, Debasser, Tim Wright, Needledust!, Nitzer Ebb, Umek,
Earnest Honest, some exclusives, including Luke Slater ('on loan' from Mute)
"Nothing At All" Console remix, Si Begg's 'Eurostar' remix, plus Thomas
Brinkmann's astounding Echoboy remix, which received only limited
availability. In addition, Plastikman's 'Afrika' rarity and Akufen's
incredible Cabaret Voltaire "Nag Nag Nag' remix and new Novamute signing,
Berlin's own T. Raumschmiere.

In addition to the 16 audio tracks are 28 mp3 files including extra b-sides
and alternative mixes, especially included for those DJ's, musicians and
producers currently using the myriad of software music packages available.
