I think it's the pre-history of the future-present [missing a really clever
emoticon]. 

I think this idea that it's a representation of previously envisioned
futures sums it up well though. I think the past depictions of the future
were generally a lot more optimistic than most people can stomach now, and
techno captures that fear and hope in one. I still cling to that vision of
the future, which might be part of why I dig techno. Dunno...
Conceptualising about techno can be dangerous (as evidenced here).
