Confirmed! The song is called What Is This. > In the future he wants to be less in the spotlight as a rapper and eventually > do more production... I guess there's a Detroit style emerging... I'd say that a Detroit style of hip hop has been around for a minute, not necessarily mainstream though. Tainted by SV has probably made the biggest splash on the airwaves, out of the stuff I'd say is D flavored. De La Soul's Stakes Is High (produced by Jay Dee) enjoyed a tiny bit of radio play. D flavor you ask?... Jazzy. Funky. Analog. Pretty Minimal. Not a lot of reverb & what not. Plump, abbreviated kick drums. Exaggerated snares & claps sharp enough to take your head off. Washy, filtered samples. Rhodes, lots of Rhodes. Large & lively staccato basslines. Swinging, free flowing scat-like vocals. Basically picking up where A Tribe Called Quest left off. I think of Dabrye, Dwele, Wajeed, Lacksadaisycal, Jay, Subterraneous, SV, my buddies greenSKY & Jazz, :brownstudy (yours truly!), and a some others I can't think of for some annoying reason (sleep deprivation perhaps?). There's a couple of other Detroit hip hop flavours running around, but they aren't as pervasive within the community - and in my opinion they suck. The aforementioned brand of head is open to some of the more adventurous "techno" stuff (akin to their own aesthetic) - i.e., Herbert, Domu, Bjork, Sutekh, blah, blah, blah... I must admit that you're less like likely to find a head into more traditional techno fare like, ummm, something from the Belleville three or UR maybe. Okay, I really should got to sleep now. Boom bip!>>> JPH.
