February 21, 2002, Detroit, MI On March 7, 20 Detroit DJs with at least 20
years experience under their belts, will be acknowledged for their extreme
dedication to the art form and their musical contributions to the city
throughout the decades. The Real Detroit 20/20 Awards, named after the 20
recipients and their 20 years in the mix, will be presented at Mixworks, the
Thursday club night at Porter St. Station, and are sponsored by Submerge,
source distributor for Detroit electronic music (www.submerge.com).
The 20/20 Awards highlight the talented individuals that built the
foundations for many of todays established and upcoming DJs and artists,
many of whom dedicated their careers to the music before the glossy
magazines, large-scale festivals and corporate sponsors existed to assist
and recognize their efforts.
The recipients of the Real Detroit 20/20 Awards include (in alphabetical
order): Bruce Bailey, Gary Chandler, Mike Clark, Greg Collier, John Collins,
Alan Ester, D-Wynn, Buzz Goree, Mike Grant, Stacey Hale, Melvin Hill, Mike
Huckaby, Dwayne Jenson, Alton Miller, Chad Novak, Alan Oldham, Terrence
Parker, James Pennington, Anthony Shake Shakir, Delano Smith, Norm Talley
and Rick Wilhite. Information on individual artists is available upon
request.
I am honored to be included in this group, says Delano Smith, who will be
receiving the Best Comeback award. Recognition for many of these guys,
especially at home in Detroit, is long overdue. Smith held residencies
throughout the 80s at clubs like LUOMO, Studio 54 and Down Stairs Pub, and
after several years of retirement returned to the music, playing various
clubs and events including DEMF 2001.
Women On Waxs DJ Minx, Mike Clark and Carl Craig of Planet E will perform
at the event, which will be emceed by Theresa Hill, the host of the
old-school and house music program, The After-School Groove, on 90.9,
WDTR. Doors will open at 10 p.m. Porter St. Station is located at 1400
Porter St., at Trumbull.
