I'm still slowly waking up, so I'll try and piece
together last night as best as possible.

The venue (Filter 14-land of overpriced drinks?) was
split into two spaces. With two ghostly virgins in
tow, we arrived just as Matthew Dear was spinning in
the front space. Overall, it seemed to be Matthew's
night. His selection of funky glitch on the tables and
beats that he produced later in his live set were
strong, confident and he was just comfortable and into
what he was doing. His record selection for his DJ set
alone had my one friend running to the ghostly booth
to buy Matt's own productions.

Via a silent 'this way!' gesture from Sam, we headed
to the back room where Midwest Product was starting
their live set. The best way to describe them is an
even more electronic and energetic Telefon Tel
Aviv. The ensemble consisted of three, one on the
guitar(and vocoder), one on drums and one on machine.
Personally, I thought the sound in the room was a bit
too loud, to the point that I wanted to stay to see
the music but my ears couldn't take the beating.

...And then came dykehouse. What isn't there to say
about Mike Dykehouse that couldn't be said about a
good alien encounter? He breezed over the bad sound
glitches with curses that had the room cracking up and
ended the set with a sing-along (one of many might I
add) to the Bee Gee's classic 'how deep is your
love?', which he eventually beatboxed over. Mike is so
talented when it comes to music, but his live
performances are a showcase of his ability to not take
it all too seriously, have fun and be creative. As it
was put, he's the extreme extrovert that we're all
afraid to let out of our own bags. I think this why he
was so cheered on and appreciated last night.

Whilst Dykehouse rocked out, I unfortunately was also
making the biggest mistake of the night-missing Tadd
play.

After Dykehouse Matthew Dear came back on for his
live PA. Not only does Matthew have the looks and the
charisma, but he also has the talent to match. The
beats that he was producing were dirty, and raw and
also flawless. We kept trying to leave (due to
tiredness) but we couldn't believe the sound coming
out of machines.

Overall, a good night and it was even greater to see
familiar faces. What I think is best about the Ghostly
crew is that the everyone involved seems to be on the
same wavelength. Symbolically shown by the 'ghostly'
ring they all wear on their hand. Amongst the ghostly
talent there's always a sense that each is happy to be
there, happy to be doing what they are doing and
enjoying it. Kudos to Elliot and co. for making the
night happen in NYC. It was a refreshing taste of
talent and home.
Kudos to Sam for doing what he does.

Shine on.
Diana
ps-dont miss the tour in it's almost hometown of
Detroit. It's a shame that Bryan Zentz couldn't have
been part of the NYC date as well as Todd Osborne.
