A EWI is a midi controller built by Yamaha ( Roland has one too) that allows
wind instrument players (such as myself) to play midi controlled intruments
and modules.
They have the same fingering set ups as saxes and trumpets. You blow into
them to control things like attack, volume phrases (much like a real wind
instrument) then you use the fingering patterns you already know the control
the pitch.
They've been around for quite awhile but dont get used alot. The Akestra has
used them quite regularly. The whole sax section used to bust out on them.
And Marshall was kickin out the the jams on the trumpet version at a show
they did at the Knit here in NYC awhile back.
