Natural Electronics - Assimilated - 12" - Frictional - frct011
Anthony Shakir returns on his own label, with a gorgeous tune showing the
best of his talents. Under the pseudonym he comes with three futuristic
tunes, of which Assimilated is the most exiting. Chords go in a very Mad
Mike/Galaxy2Galaxy together with a broken beat, make it very deeply funky.
THe tracks on the b-side go in a more freaky, experimental way towards
electro. But as ever with the freestyle approach of mr Shakir, to keep it
very, very exiting. More please!
Strand - Message 1 - 12" - Frictional - frct010
More very fine stuff from the Frictional label. Four deep tracks by Strand,
aka Mr Bonds and Harrington. Sound of tunes comes most close to stuff by
Shake and older Carl Craig. Freestyle all the way, strings, smooth rhythms
and deeply soulful. Most tracks have deep, fine strings in them, in a
blueprint Detroit techno way. Very fine, dreamy techno tunes. One of the
finest and sweetest releases this year. Recommended.
Various - Comin' from tha D - 12" - Intuit Solar - itu-008
Another showpack from the Intuit Solar label, filled with top electro
tunes. Dopplereffekt comes with the already known Pornoactress, Dj
Godfather brings the straight very bassbooty Watchlookinat?, filled with
not that tasty vocals. Nicest tune of the record comes from Keith Tucker,
leaving off with regular electrobreaks, but coming with a very spacey
synthloo, which makes it very ravey and futuristic. Last track by Aaron
Carl goes in between bootyhouse and electro. Uptempo banging beats. Nice
package.
Jay Dee - Welcome 2 Detroit - lp - BBE - bbebglp001
More Detroit stuff, but this time from the hiphop side. Welcome 2 Detroit
is the long awaited album from allstar producer Jay Dee aka James Yancey.
My expectations are very easily met, as I find it the best hiphop album
this year, so far. Influences and styles are very broad, ranging from more
disco towards funk, to brazilian/latin and other exotic things. Together
with his known tight producing quality makes this album really sounding fat
all the way down. Very, very cool!
Various - Native sampler three - 12" - Native - ns3
To admit directly, mostly picked this record up for the unreleased track by
Nuron, on the b-side. From the mr Smith, who used to run the Likemind label
back some days. But the other tracks are very nice as well. Broom & Hill
bring a very classic sounding housey track, in style of Ron Trent's Altered
States, straight and effective. John Tejada and Arian Leviste also a tasty
track along the same lines. Ben Sims brings a somewhat downtempo version of
his normal stuff, dark twisted funk. The Nuron track at last is in the
classic B12/Likemind sound, smooth and gentle. A very nice record all
together.
Duplex - Autosave - 12" - Ground Zero - gz002
Duplex are the Dutch rising stars, who already delivered fine stuff with
eps on Clone. With this new twelve inch they even could rising much higher,
as the tunes on this record are more dancefloor friendly as ever. Main
track without doubt is Autosave, a very directive, catchy dancefloor track.
Going in a Groove La Chord-way, and should easily find it's way to many
dj-bags. Second track goes in a more electro way, while the flip brings
some very warm tracks in the best Detroit tradition, towards old Jon
Beltran-stuff. All very nice stuff!
Ibex - Macamba - 12" - Planet E - pe65259
Shortly after his PLanet E debut, another twelve inch by Ibex. Four exotic
housey tracks this time. First of is Macamba, very Latin sounding with lots
of percussion and a very Octave One's Nicolette-like synth loop.
Capraquarius goes more in a deeply funk way, with even more elusive synth
stabs. The Last Laugh goes in a very clun-way, somewhat very direct. Last
track Terra Firma takes it all smooth again, in a very dreamy way. Long
delays and lots of space. Exotic things.
Aardvarck - Ludiek - 12" - Delsin - 14dsr/aar2
Sneaky Aardvarck borrows on his newest EP a bassline from Theo Parrish and
surrounds it with all kind of arrangements. Mike Kvits' broken beats go
always straight mystified in thick clouds of ganja, and sound after four
eps as adventurous as ever. (Rene)
Various - Geology 2 - 12" - Planet E - pe65261
The second overview compilation Geology also comes with a four track 12",
containing some already released and unreleased stuff. Very raw is the
Future/Past-remix of a Common Factor track. Very un-Kirkish to say, in a
hypnotizing manner. The b-side brings the better tunes, although already
known. On there are Russ Gabriel's remix of At Les, known from the first
Ferox compilation. Although (of course..) hard to beat the original, it
very funky jammin' version. Further my personal favorite of the many Bug
in.. remixes, the spiritual Street mix by Carl Craig himself, which
appeared before on Mo Wax. Nice things.
Pub - Do you ever regret pantomine? - cd - Ampoule - ampoule lp01
The Scottish Ampoule label comes with their first album, done by Pub. The
album takes further on, where the smooth Summer single stopped. Dreamy,
ambient sounds with a very organic live feel in it. Pretty whelming, very
dreamy and hypnotizing, in a way it reminded me to older stuff by The Orb
and KLF. But with it's clicks and stuff, and the warm thick curtains of
melodies it's ending up as maybe a mix between Pole, Arovane and Boards of
Canada? Too hard to catch actually, and to less to comparise. Pub is Pub,
and this is very, very beautiful stuff.
