DAN BALIS - FRANKS ep
Support : 12" / Ref : BR008 / Label : BRIQUE ROUGE release date : NOW
A1 : Dan Balis mix 1
A2 : Dan Balis mix 2
B1 : DD's Plastic Music remix
B2 : Yann Fontaine remix
written & produced by Dan Balis - add.prod. by Eugene Cho & Eli Epstein

With his debut production effort, Brooklyn's Dan Balis becomes the latest artist to join the Brique Rouge camp. Unlike most French house labels, Brique Rouge has cultivated a solid reputation for avoiding the formulaic cliches typical of their peers. Filtered disco loops are abandoned in favor of a more expansive and explicitly musical approach, much in the spirit of the early dance-floor experiments associated with labels like Salsoul, Prelude, and West End. This makes Brique Rouge an ideal choice for Dan's auspicious first single, the "Frank's EP".

While his first efforts at composition began as the guitarist for a punk band in high school, the twenty-three year old began producing several years ago while in college. It was there he met and befriended classmate Jamie Hodge, who had already recorded several critically acclaimed 12"s for Richie Hawtin's legendary +8 imprint. Hodge not only tutored Balis in the use of the school's extensive electronic music facilities, but also expanded his musical vocabulary. Initially Balis favored less obviously dance-oriented material, specifically the early Warp catalog, but soon a voracious appetite for novel sounds led him to his current preoccupation with early dance music: specifically Detroit Techno, Chicago House, and classic NYC garage. Balis began to craft a sound which while transparently referencing his influences, manages to do so without seeming anachronistic or deteriorating into trendy retro fetish.

Dan Balis' debut single features sophisticated programming and technique that suggest a studio veteran. Bongos and rhodes playing meander over tightly constructed grooves which while never tracky or repetitive, still inexorably compel listeners from their seats to the dancefloor. Strenuously avoiding samples and loops, the tracks are original compositions from top to bottom. Drums are painstakingly cut up and reworked; Dan is rarely comfortable sampling more than a tiny fragment of source material. Even pre-release, Dan's material has received high praise from luminaries such as Dan Bell and Morgan Geist.

When he's not buried in the studio, Dan can be found nursing a whiskey athis favorite Brooklyn nightspot, Frank's Lounge.
