PHUTURE 303: New album newsARTIST: PHUTURE 303 TITLE: SURVIVALS: OUR MISSION LABEL: MUSIC MAN DISTRIBUTION: PINNACLE RELEASE DATE: 16 APRIL 2001
The pioneering spirit of the first hour back at the Music Box still lives on with each new track that Phuture creates. Now with some of their best material to date Phuture release their new album on Belgium's infamous Music Man label. The album features a return of DJ Pierre to the group for a new version of Lil Louis legendary 'Blackout' with Spanky doing the vocals again from scratch. The new album, 'Survivals Our Mission', stays true to the original spirit and sound of this pioneering outfit. There is much debate and speculation about who created Acid music. The general consensus of opinion swings towards Phuture after their release of the classic hit 'Acid Tracks' which had unwittingly created the blueprint for the children of the revolution, and turned the dance music world on its head. It was the creative talent of Earl 'Spanky' Smith that changed the course of dance music history forever when in 1984 Spanky and Herb Jackson searched high and low throughout the city of Chicago for a Roland TB 303 just to make bass lines. Later DJ Pierre joined Spanky and Herb and from this legendary moment acid house music was born in the form of 'Acid Tracks'. The tape created in this immortal session was passed onto the legendary DJ Ron Hardy, who at the time was a resident at the Music Box. Ron Hardy played the tape 4 times that night and a new phenomenon was born. With the release of their second hit single, 'We Are Phuture' the groups status as the leader of the Acid House scene was confirmed (pressed on the ever so dodgy recycled Trax imprint) and after a year, the future of the group was put on hold when DJ Pierre moved to New Jersey after his club hit 'Pfantasy Girl'. Nothing was heard from the Phuture crew until 1990. At this time 'Rise From Your Grave' was unleashed with a line up featuring Spanky, DJ Pierre, Jay Janall, and Phill Little and PHuture were reborn. After the success of 'Rise From Your Grave' DJ Pierre left the group to concentrate on solo projects and replaced by Damon 'Professor Trax' Neloms. The group then expanded into a larger multi-headed monster with the addition of Ron 'DJ Skull' Maney and Roy Davis Jnr. Together they scored a huge hit with the epic 'Times Fade' and the follow up debut album 'Alpha & Omega' in 1998. Not long after the album Spanky and Prof. Trax decided to keep the group as a duo. DJ Skull and Roy Davis Jnr. left and continued with their own solo recordings. The duo then unleashed their powerful signature tune 'Acid Soul' on Djax Up Beats. Survivals Our Mission features some of Phuture's most prolific production work to date. Besides 'Blackout' weighing in at a full length, vinyl only mix of 13 minutes (edited CD version) are club gems such as 'Flatline' and 'Riden' as well as the low-pitched 'Vintage Drums¹ and instantly recognisable vocals of Spanky for the album titled 'Survivals Our Mission'. The minimal tribal rhythms of 'Pro-Traxx Rhythm' 'Metal Percussions', and 'Tribal Tek' all add to the unique styles of Phuture¹s creativity, while '2001' and 'Northern Lights' show their deeper shades utilising exuberant strings over solid percussion, but never loosing sight of the dancefloor. On the vinyl is an exclusive new mix of their incredible house anthem 'String Free' (previously released on Hot Mix 5, Chicago). An album packed full of Phuture classics.
