Just listened again to the Oliver Ho LP and realised that it's track three that samples Steve Reich, not track 4, and I think the sample is actually from the track 'Drumming', not Electric Counterpoint.

Apologies for not being accurate first time round. Double apologies to those not interested in my trainspotterish pedantry! ;-)

While we're on the subject of Reich though, 'Drumming' is probably even more 'techno' than 'Electric Counterpoint'. It's an astonishing piece made from 12 people playing live rhythm loops on an assortment of tuned drums, marimba, glockenspiels, voice and piccolo. The way it works is that the different performers start and stop playing their loops, which are also vary in lenghth.

The effect is that seemingly random shifting patterns emerge as the varying length loops overlay each other in different ways. All the while the rhythm inexorably builds up. Essentially it sounds totally like minimal techno and lasts for about 85 minutes! If you ever get the chance to listen to it right through it's utterly mesmerising. It was released on Deutsche Grammophon as a box set and isn't too hard to pick up.

I have the new album too, are you speaking about track 4??

Subject: (313) Oliver Ho/radio playlist - 15/5/04

hello

Just received the new Oliver Ho album in the post, it's called 'The
Soft Machine' and is coming out on Meta. Listening to it right now in
fact and have to say that I'm rather enjoying it. There's a track
that samples Steve Reich (always the way to win favour with me) +
lots of 313 style synthy business.

Hadn't actually consciously heard any of his stuff before. Had lumped
him together with the looped bangers people but there seems to be
more to it than that.

Anyone have any further Oliver Ho recommendations?
