Thanks for all the replies! Plenty of options I've never heard of (FORTH
and hip-hop compilers!) In the end I've managed to wrangle more CPU cores
which will allow me to run multiple pollers and more RAM + separate swap
drive.

I wrote an HTML 5 tool to assist with the learning of colour codes which is
