I think I'd better say that I made up my little table simply by trying
to adapt the tonic-subdominant-dominant system to the various modes.
Then I tried to come up with something else when that solution
*obviously* didn't
I had a bit of a mishap and lost all of my email from late Friday night

Seems like once a key has been specified, any of the I, iim, IV, V type
terminology would also be specified. If terms like Ionian do not exist for
any specific key, scale type or chord, it might be best to stay with the

The "three chord trick" (pun on the three card trick, or three card monte)
says that you can harmonise any tune with three chords. In the open key
of C major these are:
C major harmonises C E or G (in any octave
G7 harmonises D F G or B (in any octave)
F major harmonises C F or A (in any octave)
