This works in ms word 10 or the office xp suite.
Go to Format menu, Tabs... submenu to activate the tab stop dialogue box.
The first control is an edit field where you can specify the position of the
first tab stop. If you type 3 here, that will become the first tab stop on a
line.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the Clear and Clear all buttons in the Tabs...
dialogue box. You can use them to reject tab settings if necessary.
Also note that default tab stop will be set only for the active document.
For all documents it will remain as it is.
