The characters, like Tara, who prioritizes education over marriage, and Puri, whose principles clash with his impoverished circumstances, offer a window into the complexities of pre-partition society. Asad's willingness to sacrifice his love for the sake of communal harmony reflects the tensions and challenges of the time. However, as the story unfolds, the novel delves into the horrors of the partition itself. The violence, displacement, and suffering that engulfed the region on the eve of Independence are described in a harrowing manner.
