Dr Bodhankar elected president of Commonwealth Association for Health and
Disability

NAGPUR: Well known city paediatrician Dr Uday Bodhankar has been elected as
president of the Commonwealth Association for Health and Disability (COMHAD)
that has 54 member nations. He says his focus during three year tenure would be
on improving facilities and public utilities for disabled population in the
country.

Bodhankar has been associated with COMHAD for 25 years and served as its
secretary general for last four years up to December 2012. He is the first
Indian to head the organization. COMHAD is an official collaborator of World
Health Organization and is actively involved in promoting health development,
exchange of technical expertise and inter-country training and education in
health in Commonwealth countries.

Dr MS Akbar, a Bangladeshi MP who was the president for the last term, was able
to bring down infant and maternal mortality rate in his country to the level of
any developed country. "His strategy was to introduce rigorous vaccination
drives for kids that included polio and pentavalent vaccines. He also promoted
breastfeeding and safe motherhood practices," he said.

"Though we have a large population of the disabled, no public place is
disabled-friendly. I hope to work in this direction, starting with our city and
gradually extending these changes elsewhere," said Dr Bodhankar. The government
may have several schemes for people with disability, but there is no awareness
of these among people, he added. "Disability becomes even more unbearable,
especially kids from poor backgrounds who are at times forced to beg on
streets. We aim to make things better for such kids," he added.

With thanks and regards
