About me

I acquired my Bachelors and Masters degree in commerce and economics from
leading colleges in Mumbai. . After a stint as a journalist at a national
newspaper,
I signed up for a PG diploma in Social Communications at Sophia Polytechnic and
went on to top my class.

After graduation, I have worked on translating and editing manuscripts :
PEACOCK FEATHERS- a book on ethical living, and AYURVEDIC GARBHA SANSKAR- a book
on pregnancy and childcare. Alongside I freelanced with New Women, a leading
women's magazine.

In 2011, I came across a dream opportunity offered by a Mumbai-based nonprofit
called Point of View that advocates for women's rights through media, art
and culture interventions. My role was as a project coordinator for the
country's first-ever initiative to build an online resource for women with
disabilities.
with them I co-authored the website
www.sexualityanddisability.org,
which talks about issues of sexual rights, relationships and violence faced by
women with disabilities.

I was invited to present my findings at the Pacific Rim International
Conference on Disability and Diversity in Hawaii. Even though my lens for the
project
was Indian, or South Asian at best, I learnt that the issues and the narratives
resonated with a global audience.

Outside building the online resource, I organized a campaign for Point of View
to address gender-based violence. Called 'Humari Zindagi, Humari Choice',
I worked with six Mumbai colleges and reached 1000 students to highlight ideas
of inclusion, feminism and homosexuality. On my own time, I volunteer with
two nonprofit organizations to organize life-skills training ranging from self
defense, mobility, table etiquette, and first aid to career counseling for
the visually impaired. I also mentor others like me to help them overcome
physical and psychological barriers.

I have been invited at conferences by CEHAT, a women's rights group, and the
Feminist India group to share my experience and perspective on issues of gender,
disability and their intersection.

To take my grass roots activism to the next lever of influence- policy making
on a regional and international scale, I am pursuing MSC in development
studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science with a full
scholarship from the Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program. This
academic degree is a step to move towards my long-term goal which is to form
policy on gender and disability issues with a focus on South Asia. Alongside
policy work I want to be an informed, public voice to influence change in
attitudes towards women with disabilities.

when I am in my non work or academic avatar, I am someone who loves dancing,
being a trained bharat natyam and salsa dancer, or am listening to music,
having trained in Hindustani vocal for 4 years, or am enjoying a good theatre
production , swimming at leisure, or meeting interesting people.
