KOLKATA: A probe has been ordered into allegations of ragging after a
Jadavpur University third-year international relations student, who
has partial eyesight, complained of being ragged in the New Block
hostel on Monday. Another student with eyesight issues has also lodged
a similar complaint.
JU dean of students, Rajat Ray, acknowledged receiving the complaints
and said a meeting of the anti-ragging squad had been convened on
Wednesday. "We will investigate the case following the procedures set
by UGC," added Ray.

According to the complainant, Buddhadev Jana, he went to talk to his
friend in search of a writer for an internal exam when he was
subjected to abusive words related to his disability, harassed and
physically hurt.
Jana has e-mailed his complaints to VC Suranjan Das and the dean of
students, accusing an ex-student of mechanical engineering department,
who has been staying at the hostel, of ragging.
Another visually disabled UG second year student of the history
department, Amit Kapuri, has also emailed the vice-chancellor and the
dean of students complaining of ragging and harassment at the same
hostel.
"I had gone to a friend's room in the New Block hostel around 6pm on
Monday. While I was talking to him, an ex-student of the mechanical
engineering department who is still living in the hostel came to the
room. He used abusive words related to my disability and tried to hurt
me physically. He then dragged me from the first floor of the hostel
to outside. Due to my visual disability, it was difficult to protect
myself. Finally, a friend of mine saved me," said Jana, a boarder of G
C Sen hostel.
"The dean of students was informed. An official from dean's office and
the superintendent of the hostel came and spoke with the accused and
his friends," added Jana. In his email to the VC and the dean of
students, Jana said the incident has affected his mental health and he
is feeling insecure on the campus.
Kapuri, too, in his complaint, alleged that he and his friends were
abused and threatened on October 22 night by the same ex-student and
one of his friends.
Suraj Jha, joint convenor of Forum for Students with Disabilities, JU,
said, "We have called a rally on Wednesday on the campus and will give
a letter to the VC demanding action against those who have committed
such an incident."

What’s most important is to put the person first, the disability
second Because we all are people first.
