Move to develop curriculum for disability studies

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Accusing the University Grants Commission of a "lackadaisical
attitude" towards development of disability studies as an academic discipline,
the Society for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies has constituted a
17-member non-official core group to develop a model curriculum for disability
studies. It will be chaired by Dr. G. N. Karna.

The group has been set up to develop and formulate syllabi for various
programmes in disability studies. It will submit its report within six months to
the Society, which in turn will submit it to President Pratibha Patil and the
Union Human Resource Development Minister.

The HRD Ministry recognised disability studies as an academic discipline in
September 2005.

According to the Society, the HRD Ministry directed the UGC to extend support
to universities and colleges in setting up special departments or centres
for disability studies and also to institute a Rajiv Gandhi Chair in Disability
Studies in each Central university.

The Society alleged that the UGC had not yet started the first stage of
constituting the model curriculum development committee for disability studies.
