ABOUT RAMNATH BATRA DIGITAL TALKING BOOK LIBRARY: R.N. Batra Talking Book Library was established in 1986. It has produced more than 1500 titles by now (English & Hindi). These talking books are of different types viz: Fiction, Non-fiction, School text books, University text books, Competitive exam. books, books related to personality development and current affairs magazine. From 1986 to 2002, library concentrated only on providing talking books on cassettes alone. With the financial support of Nippon Foundation provided to us under the DAISY For All Project and HPS Social Welfare Foundation the library introduced production of books in digital formats in accordance to DAISY Standards. With the help of the ICEVI Lee foundation, the library also introduced the section of e-text library. From Nov. 2002 onwards it switched to Digital Recording i.e. DAISY (Digital Access Information System). It is necessary here to mention significance of DAISY. IMPORTANCE OF DAISY: 1. Formerly it was not possible to navigate heading by heading, chapter by chapter or page by page, but this problem has been totally overcome with the help of DAISY. 2. One C.D. has the capacity of fifty hours of recording i.e. equivalent to fifty cassettes. So it is easy for the user to handle one C.D. instead of fifty cassettes. 3. The books recorded can be preserved till eternity. Even in case of new edition the changes can be made easily in the pre-recorded book without wasting much time. 4. A C.D. reaches far off places, without much difficulty, being light in weight & small in size. 5. DAISY books are MEANT not ONLY for visually impaired persons but are also helpful to the slow-learners, aged persons and persons suffering from dyslexia; in other words these types of books are useful for all print disabled persons. Moreover, no special skills are required to use these books as play back softwares are available free of cost with N.A.B, Delhi. 6. These books can be played not only on the computer, but also on the MP3 players which are easily available in the market at a low cost of Rs.1,000/- to Rs. 1,500/-, which is almost equivalent to the cost of a good tape-recorder.
