Subject: Protest Rape of Hearing Impaired Patient In Bankura

February 29, 2012

Press Statement

The National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) strongly condemns
the rape of a hearing impaired patient by a doctor inside the Bankura Medical
College in West Bengal.

According to the complaint lodged by the victim's mother, the resident doctor
of the hospital took the victim for medical examination and raped her.

This is the third such incident in the month of February reported from West
Bengal. During this month, two cases of rape were reported in Kolkata. Earlier,
on January 12 one school girl was kidnapped from 24 Parganas subsequently was
gangraped. On February 26, a 30-year-old woman was raped by a gang of armed
robbers. A few days earlier, a woman was raped in a moving car in Kolkata. In
that case the victim also faced difficulties while trying to lodge a police
complaint.

Equally deplorable is the attitude of the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata
Banerjee (who also holds the Home portfolio), who instead of taking firm
administrative measures to check such incidents is questioning the character
and antecedents of the women concerned and then alleging that the opposition is
fabricating these stories to defame her government.

The Paschimbanga Rajya Prathibandi Sammelini, an affiliate of the NPRD will be
holding a protest tomorrow in Kolkata against the incident and demanding an
impartial probe into the incident; sacking of the doctor and adequate
compensation to the victim.
