Hi List Members,
I have started a online petition against
ecommerce firms(flipkart.com,snapdeal.com and Amazon.com) requesting them to
make their website and Mobile App accessible. It is extremely critical for us as
App developers are not developing accessible Apps which can be used by us.Most
of the online websites and Apps are inaccessible to us and I had wrote several
emails to the senior management of these firms but it seems they are not
serious enough.I was compelled to take some action and hence,I started a online
petition in change.org as part of raising awareness.I am targeting 1 lac
supporters for this and would like a overwhelming support of you so that there
is adequate pressure on these ecommerce firms.I am also trying to get contact
details of Mr.sachin Bansal,CEO of flipkart through my alumni contact at
Indian Institute of Management,Bangalore(IIMB).You can go through this link to
sign this online petition.

Friends,Mobile APPs are the future and if we do not start raising awareness
about our needs;we would witness huge problems in the future. Also, please share
this across your friends if you do believe in this cause.
I am also copying the brief details on the petition which is also included as
part of change.org.
Whether it's shopping, dining or travelling, our lives have been simplified
through technology and phenomenal rise of Ecommerce. We are all enjoying the
fruits of technology and the internet then why are 20 million People with
visual disabilities excluded from this? Do you think these facilities can make
them more independent?
Why are websites and App's like flipkart inaccessible to these people?
How can the future leaders, marketing research teams, product development
teams and web and app developers miss out on their basic needs and more
importantly such a huge business opportunity?
Blind/People with visual disabilities individuals use screen reading
technology which makes anormal computer a talking computer. The technology is
used even on phone. The developers just need to adopt simple accessibility
guidelines while developing their applications and content to make them
accessible for all kinds of users.
According to Article 9 of the United Nations council of Rights for people
with Disabilities(UNCRPD) to which India is a signatory,It is the duty of the
state and private organisations to provide equal access to person with
disability in all forms.I am enclosing the annexure g) for your reference:
  g) To promote access for persons with disabilities to new information and
communications technologies and systems, including the Internet
I contacted flipkart.com twice regarding this issue and got standard
replies in return. I am copying the email of flipkart and also attaching the
snapshot for your reference.

This email was also sent to me six months back with the same standard
Reply. Now, please tell me that IS this not injustice to people who just want
equal access. Forget about legal mandates, the cost for this is really
negligible. Flipkart would need to invest a negligible part of the profits
that they would earn in no time from the same untapped customers.
Unfortunately it's just not a priority for flipcart like most organizations
in India. I just want flipkart and all other firms to make their website and
Mobile App accessible to people with visual disabilities and fulfill their
right to equal access.
Will you join me in supporting this cause? We need you.
Regards,
Vineet saraiwala
