*Scholarship brightens up blind prof’s PhD dreams in UK*

Aug 23, 2015, Asian Age Correspondent, Mumbai

Being visually impaired has not stopped this vivacious man from beating the
odds and bagging the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship enabling him to
pursue a three-year PhD degree in Philosophy from the University of
Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Unlike last year, Vivek Pachpande (31) from Mumbai
has secured the scholarship this year leaving behind few hundreds of
students from India.

Last year too, Mr Pachpande had secured admission to the University of
Edinburgh, but due to his middle class background, the Dombivali (east)
resident could not afford the expenses to stay and study in the UK for
three long years, which would have cost him around `70 lakh. However, now
after securing the scholarship he doesn’t have to think much about the
expenses.

They will be taken care of by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and
the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Mr Pachpande said, “My parents are proud of me. My mentor Dr Priyedarshi
Jaitley (retired reader from Delhi University) guided me for the
scholarship and my dear friends Mahesh Ursekar and Manasee Karnalkar helped
me a lot throughout the process. I wish to return to India after my PHD to
continue my teaching career.”

Mr Pachpande was one of the few hundreds who applied for the Commonwealth
Scholarship and less than a 100 were nominated from India after a personal
interview by the department of higher education in the ministry of human
resource development. Among these 100, only around a quarter got selected
by the Commission for the scholarship.

Mr Pachpande, Happy home for the Blind, Worli student cleared his SSC
examination with a distinction in 1999 and went on to complete his M.A.
(Philosophy) with a first class. From 2006, he started his teaching career
and has been a visiting faculty at G. Bedekar College, SIES College, SK
Somaiya College, Ruparel College and Thakur College. For over two years
from 2010, he was a visiting faculty at the Mumbai University teaching
Philosophy.

His teacher Dr Meenal Katarnikar, associate professor at Mumbai University
said, “Vivek is a brilliant student. He is very well read and sharp. This
achievement is an inspiration for all students.”
