In what could be India’s largest multi-level car parking (MLCP) at an airport,
the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has made a special section
dedicated for cars of differently-abled people.

Officials involved with the development of the project said there will be
assistance for the disabled in alighting from and getting into their cars at
the MLCP in addition to the availability of wheelchairs, trolleys and other
facilities. “All efforts have been taken to make their journey as stress-free
as possible,” said an insider.

The 10-storey structure, built over a periphery of 910m, has a parking capacity
of over 5,000 cars apart from space to accommodate 400 motorcycles. Three of
its floors are in the basement, airport officials revealed, adding that the
parking area boasts of adequate closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and
other security systems for the safety of passengers and others.

MLCP also has 96 toilets, including 20 for the physically -challenged.

According to travel industry experts and design experts, the
specially-designated areas for the disabled — to ensure a stress-free time for
them, in parking and elsewhere are the hallmark of most world-class airports,
including Frankfurt, Beijing and Heathrow among others.

The other salient features are the gardens and water fountains created inside
to relax and sooth fliers before departure and on arrival.

In comparison, Terminal 3 at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in
Delhi has five storeys and a capacity to accommodate 4,300 cars. Its parking
facility has some of the most advanced features available in the country, such
as an integrated electronic system to calculate how long a car was stationed in
the allotted parking space, electronic signages to point out vacant parking
slots and a space availability display system to indicate the number and
location of the vacant slot.

However, when asked whether it has a designated area for the disabled to park
their cars, an IGI spokesperson did not respond to the e-mail sent by dna.
