It is my pleasure to invite all of you to a talk by Professor Ravinder Barn
(Royal Holloway University of London) on the topic: *'Non-government
organisations and family intervention: Negotiating risk, power and
modernity*'.

The talk will be held at 11 A.M. on the 5th of January in the Seminar Hall
of the Department of Sociology, University of Delhi.

Although this talk is being organised as part of the MPhil course on
Rethinking family in contemporary societies, everyone interested is welcome
to attend.

A brief Abstract of the talk and a short biographical note about Professor
Barn follows.

Abstract

In this talk, Professor Barn will examine the role of non-government
organisations in the development and implementation of support structures
for families experiencing vulnerability and marginalisation. By drawing on
research carried out in London and Odisha (Barn & Das, 2015; Barn and
Puhan, 2016), an attempt will be made to identify key challenges in family
intervention approaches. In particular, the Maori practice of ‘family group
conferencing’, and ‘community-based child protection mechanisms’ will be
discussed in the context of socio-economic disadvantage, risk, power and
modernity.

Biography:Ravinder Barn is Professor of Social Policy in the School of Law,
Royal Holloway University of London. She is the author or editor of eight
books and over 85 journal papers or book chapters. Ravinder writes on race,
gender, social welfare, crime, and criminal justice. Her recent work on
sexual violence and criminal justice is among the top 10 'most read' in the
British Journal of Criminology (August 2015). Her research on child welfare
and migrant groups is highly regarded nationally and internationally. Her
latest book, published by Oxford University Press, analyses child welfare
systems in 11 countries to promote theoretical and empirical understandings
of contemporary concerns surrounding globalisation, migration, and child
rights.

Professor Barn is a mixed-methods researcher. Her academic base is
inter-disciplinary and spans social policy, sociology, social work, and
criminology.
