Visually impaired voters welcome Braille initiative

Pundalik Borde cast his vote by using Braille candidate list
Nagpur: For the first time in polls, visually impaired voters received their
voter slips in Braille script, making the process of locating their designated
booths a lot easier. Additionally at the polling booths, they were given a
ballot sheet in Braille to identify the candidates through their index numbers
and match the same with those on EVMs.
Rajlaxmi Shah, deputy district election officer, said “We distributed around
2,800 voter slips in Braille. To ensure that the booth level officers (BLOs)
are also able to identify where these slips are to be delivered, we published
the same information in Devnagari script on the backside of the slip.”
Once at their designated booths, visually impaired voters can go through the
Braille ballot paper to identify their candidates’ index number. Shah said,
“They use the same EVM and vote according to the index number of their
preferred candidate.” So, if the voter’s candidate is at number two in the
ballot sheet, he/she will press the second button on the EVM as the serial
numbers will match.
Pundalik Borde, a visually impaired voter, said, “For the first time, I was
able to vote without assistance and it’s a wonderful feeling. Officials present
at the polling booth handed over to me a Braille list of candidates with their
index number and symbol. After going through the list thoroughly, I was
directed towards the EVM.. The candidates’ index number was mentioned on the
right side of the machine which I read.”
Another voter Manish Thool, however, pointed to an issue which seems to have
been overlooked by authorities. “There were two EVMs in my booth as there were
many candidates in fray. One machine had serial numbers from 1 to 16 and other
machine too had the same numbering system (1-16) instead of continuing the
order from 17,” said Thool.
“Thankfully, the people present at the booth were very cooperative and it
helped me cast my vote correctly,” he said.
Another voter Sayeed Moin said this initiative by the Election Commission of
India has ‘liberated’ them. “I was able to cast my vote without help from
family or any of the staff members and this filled me with a sense of
independence,” said Moin.
