I'm afraid to say you're right with your assumption.
I ran the tests again with "idle=poll" and it failed on the eighth attempt.
Then I tried processor.max_cstate=1 again and it fail

Hmm hmm. Looks like we may never find out -- it appears that my latest OSX
upgrade changed the firmware too and now the ACPI battery reading doesn't stall
this way any more. At least

Can't seem to get this patch to apply properly.
Unfortunately I'm using Ubuntu on this laptop, and I'm trying to hook into
their kernel build system, which seems to be vastly over complicated.

If you need some hardware work from me on my laptop - I ready, I have
qualification in this sphere, so it will not problem for me. I just want to get
