You need to modify your own kernel config file, not the one /boot/config-2.6.xx
and recompile kernel.

I found that if I remove my Adaptec Ultra 160 AIC-7892 SCSI card, the machine
will power off. It's something related to this that causes it to reset rather
than power down.

I hava the same problem! When i use kernel 2.6.20.x and 2.6.21.x my notebook
