with the new abilities of AD2003 to burn a copy of the database to a tape or cd
so that you can restore it on to a new server at another location to save
bandwidth in replication. Thing is, the instructions i have (translated so a bit
tricky to read) say that i need to
Olly,
You need to do restore the NTDS.DIT file
onto the machine you want to DCPROMO and then when you DCPROMO /ADV , at one
point the Wizard will give you the option to either DCPROMO over the network or
Offline ( at which point you can browse to the .dit file you restored)

Using the dcpromo.exe /adv option will present you with the "restore from
alternate location" option during the wizard install.

The
/ADV option provides the ability to perform something MS refer to as "Install

You could try to do an non-authoratative restore of your sysvol (setting the
burflags option to D2).

I am wondering if I only get the error when
Any chance one of the last things that was done on the server was stopping
some useless services and changing their startup to Manual or

Title: Follow up to 5788 and 5789 take2
With regard to the 5788 and 5789 errors. I just did a test and rejoined a computer to the domain. When doing so the errors were not there. Inspecting the security setting on the computer (via AD Users and Computers/advanced view) the security settings
I had a little problem today, my server is running Windows 2000 Server
and naturally it's sharing a few files. I tried opening a document on
the server but I could only open it in read only mode because someone
had it opened before me. Is it possible to tell from the server or my
