Sad day, all. James 'Jimmy' Doohan passed away. I'm sure most of you knew this - I heard it first thing this AM.
The Engineer's Engineer. As a Kid, I didn't want to be Kirk (Yes - I watched the show... I AM that old), though some days Spock was cool too. But it was always the attraction of the Scottish brogue and the attitude of the Chief Engineer of the Enterprise that I idolized - I wanted to BE Scotty. [1] I met Jimmy in Kansas City some years ago. Must have been 1977 - Star Wars had just come out. And I was in KC with a friend. She knew a lady with the sweetest baby, and we decided to go to the movie theater to see Star Wars for, oh I dunno - the 150th time? Anyway, she wanted to drop the baby off with her husband. We went over to her hotel room and she (the lady with the baby) says, "Well come out and meet everyone". Out walks Doohan. I think I crapped my pants right there. I don't think I got a word out of my mouth. I was so frakking shocked. We sat around while the ladies and Jimmy chatted for about 10 minutes, then went over to see Star Wars. Yeah, I shared popcorn with Jimmy Doohan's wife.... I've never really been the same. [2] Rick [1] It might have been Scotty's constant drinking and getting drunk, too.
