Thanks for your responses, having searched on the message groups, I have come across a few people who have suggested than renaming a Windows 2003 using the Netdom function is not a good idea without backing it up with a viable reason.

you will need to ensure that routers are re-configured to forward BOOTP requests
to the new IP, if the DHCP service is installed on a machine which receives an
IP address change.

One potential gotcha is that if your DCs register SRV
records in their own local copy of the zone and not on some other remote DC/DNS
server, then when a DC is demoted the SRV records will only be removed locally
and will still appear on the remote copies of the zone.

Frank,
Just dcpromo the old one down, and dcpromo the new one up. You only need
to do a metadata cleanup if the DC is uncleanly removed (aka not dcpromo’ed
down).
