The only way to read client data from a tape is to set-up another TSM
server, and restore the database from your current TSM server onto it.
You would then be able to access the data on the tape, it cannot be done
without TSM.
I have heard this several times.
Where in the IBM TSM documentation
Let me rephrase the question.
If you dump the data off of the tape, what do you see.

This is exactly the information I need for the Auditor.
Is this spelled out in any formal IBM TSM documentation?
Thanks,

The auditor would like a published statement from IBM TSM that says
something like:
The TSM data is written in a proprietary format which prevents a tape
utility; such as 'ditto', 'Iebcopy', etc.,
from being able to read any of the client information.
Thank you for your help and patience.

One way is to set the parameter Disablescheds to 'yes' in the dsmserv.opt
file
before restarting the TSM server.

Hello All,

We have some Novell Netware clients upgrading to 5.?.
I would like to exclude the license objects for Netware 5 using the client
option set on the server.
The syntax in the Netware Client manual for the dsm.opt file doesn't work

Put this in a file and execute the file as root:

dsmc sched /dev/null 21

This is from Curt Schriever at IBM support. IC26843 for AIX4.3.3
You may get a false error stating that start_sched not found,

Hopefully this is an easy one.
Does the server command "disable sessions" carry across the server halt and
restart,
or does it have to be reentered after the restart?
Thanks,

Thank you Richard,
I'll start looking into these possible causes for the problem.
And I guess I'll also have to come up with a way to monitor for this
problem outside of TSM and the 3494.
Thanks to everyone for their comments and suggestions.

Thank you for the replies.
The main thing I am trying to prevent is the cancellation of the job because
of the failure of TSM
to recognize that repeated mounts of a bad tape is not going to make the
tape "all better" and usable.
The failure of the job to complete has a domino affect on subsequent
Thank you for the suggestion.
There are always at least 250 scratch tapes available in the library.

Environment:
Source and target servers are both RS6000 S/P high nodes at AIX 4.3.3 and
communicating via SP switch.
Files at the target server will be migrated from a disk pool off to tape.
