At least on Linux this won't work. When I tried upgraded a client from
5.5 to 6.1, backups worked fine. I then ran into a bug that affected 6.1
but not 5.5, but when I downgraded none of the backups were visible.
After I upgraded the backups were visible again, so I just waited for
the bug to be f
Downgrading a client which has performed backups at the higher level
typically means that restorals are no longer possible at the lower
level, due to architectural alterations made to the filespaces in the
TSM server via the newer client software.

I have been working with TSM 14 years and never I had to do that.. My
recommendation is to upgrade to the last patch version of TSM client. In case
