It's also part of the tape label (L1, L2 or L3, that is if you are using
the IBM labels).
I've seen at a customer site tape labels like A002 and then
TSM/Library/Driver thinks this is an
LTO2 tape, but in fact it was LTO1.

The label lenght can be changed. There is an option on the 3584
Specialist Web Interface to change to 6 char volser reporting.
However, you may not want to do that. If I understand your
