Is the RS232 port on the H50 set the same as on the SP node? Speed, parity, etc, all have to be the same, or you won't communicate.
I've worked with a few Serial connected 3494's, and I'd recommend trying to get an ethernet connection going, if possible. It's much more commonly used, so there's a lot more people with experience with it (including the IBM CE's you have come out to work on it). Just my $0.02 worth on that, though.
