We started doing this a few years ago. I put about 15-20 vanilla bean pods
(you sort of squish them before putting them in) in a 750ml bottle of the
cheapest vodka I can find. I’ve got some that’s been on the shelf for almost 3
years now. You have to remember to take the bottles out and shake them
occasionally and store them in a dark area such as a closet. I’ve used them
after a month or 2 but they definitely get better the longer they sit. Oh, and
don’t get tempted by the cheaper vanilla bean powder on Amazon. It doesn’t
absorb into the vodka and is rather strange. It does smell like vanilla
extract though and we did use it.

My wife makes her own. Puts sticks of vanilla in vodka bottles. Waits several
months. Has vanilla extract.

Subject: [AFMUG] OT: Vanilla Extract

I'm guessing many people on here dabble in the baking arts. My Bottle
of Rodelle Vanilla Extract that I got several years ago has run out.
Some of the more recent reviews for Rodelle say that it's watered down
now. All sites that I've viewed say that McCormick has changed their
formula and it's just no good anymore. Watkins looks to have pretty
good reviews, and costs about 30% more than McCormick. Amazon has good
selection, but alot of the reviews say they might be counterfeit products.

Anyone bought some Vanilla extract recently and can offer a review?
