. No matter how many times I press the
control key VoiceOver will start reading again after five seconds or so. So I
just end up slamming the lid down just to keep it quiet. Suppose I could mute
VoiceOver but I thought the control key was the way to do it.

You don’t need to turn VoiceOver off, you only need to mute it by doing a three
finger double tap on the trackpad or a three finger double tap on the iPhone
screen. This will keep voice-over on.
