I have used Calibre to convert Kindle e-books from AZW digital restricted mode
to open format. This process was cumbersome like any other method using
digitally restricted media. Unfortunately I haven't converted e-books lately
since my local library has an accessible service where they provide freely
readable e-books. It is also possible to request almost any book including
university coursebooks on that service. The service is free of charge for
people who need certain accommodations in order to read paper or electronic
books and papers.

This is how conversion with Calibre at least used to work:
I purchased a Kindle Paperwhite device from Amazon which automatically got
attached to my Amazon account.
All purchased restricted kindle books got automatically downloaded by my Kindle
device.
Kindle connected over USB to my computer.
Calibre fetched e-books from my Kindle.
Calibre converted digitally restricted media (DRM) AZW e-books to open format
and placed it in a folder/directory on my computer.
If memory serves I used Daisy reader for testing the converted books. The local
library provides Daisy readers for those who need it.

Technically conversion uses cryptography where Kindle device serial number is
needed for removing the restriction where one is allowed to use only that
single approved device.

For converting Amazon Kindle ebooks with Calibre one needed to have a physical
Kindle device. It had to be Kindle Paperwhite or some other e-ink device.
Kindle e-book restrictions were bound to that physical device.

I have no knowledge whether Amazon still uses the same cryptographic methods
and if it still is possible to remove the restrictions. You could try
contacting the author of Calibre and asking directly.

Regards,
Birdie

2023-07-24 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
Hi, upon searching, I've found 3 applications that claim to display
Amazon Kindle books for reading: Calibre, Foliate, and Lector. Is any of
them good?

Whatever is good if any, does it read the current Kindle format? Some
online services claim to convert the AZW format, but they appear to
convert only an old version, as when I try to convert, it says can't
convert due to DRM restrictions.

Thanks,

Re: Build issues

2023-07-21 Thread Simon Josefsson via OATH Toolkit general discussions
Hi Joseph,

Thanks for your interest. Can you be specific about what your build
problems are? Explaining how you tried to build the package, and what
error message you got will help.

OATH Toolkit is built continously in GitLab CI/CD:

https://gitlab.com/oath-toolkit/oath-toolkit/-/pipelines

The latest release 2.6.9 builds in many environments:

https://gitlab.com/oath-toolkit/oath-toolkit/-/pipelines/925626986

I maintain the Debian packages for it, which are also updated and
appears to build on all architectures:

Including cross-builds:

Re: Fedora

2023-07-21 Thread Linux for blind general discussion

Now that i have Fedora installed i have a couple of questions.

when i turn on computer it does read at the login screen, however when
i  am logged in it is not turning on automatically.  I have to do alt F2
and then type in orca everytime i log in.

i went through the settings however i am overlooking something.

when it reads  say for example the icons on the desktop  like the trash
icon, it reads the word trash in a normal voice but it says the word
icon in a very high pitch voice.

how can i change that  high pitch is annoying.

Re: Mint Installation?

2023-07-21 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
    I said Lightdm by mistake.  Under Mate the default window manager
seems to be Marco.  You can change to the older one called Metacity.

On Debian this procedure works, and probbably would work on Mint.

apt install metacity

From your ID at the command prompt.

gsettings set org.mate.session.required-components windowmanager metacity

Then reboot.
To go back to Marco
gsettings set org.mate.session.required-components windowmanager marco

Then reboot.

You could try it if you keep getting hung and see if it makes a
difference.  Maybe you have a different problem.

Thankfully though, we didn’t have any significant damage to our property, other

I left my Linux machine on during the storm & probably shouldn't have.

      If you are running Mate, sometimes the Marco process becomes hung, which
causes ORCA to seem hung.  If you press ORCA+space or try moving the mouse, it
may get you out of the situation.  I'm not running Mint, but it happens on
Debian and Ubuntu, and Mint is derived from Ubuntu.  A more permanent fix is to
change to the Lightdm window manager, but it isn't a good long-term solution..

Hi,
I sincerely apologize, but I was wrong about the size of the SSD in my laptop.
It's actually a 0.5TB drive because that's the highest this hardware, which is
at least 15 years old supports.
We just had a bad thunderstorm go through tonight & the machine is now coming
up to a text-based login prompt, which means that I don't have speech.
A friend is going to help me fix it probably sometime next week. We will work
remotely.

[Evergreen-general] Call for volunteers: Evergreen accessibility conformance report planning

2023-07-20 Thread Galen Charlton via Evergreen-general
Hi,

Following up on a board decision last month, I would like to identify some
volunteers to assist with procuring an accessibility conformance report for
Evergreen's OPAC using the VPAT template.

I've proposed some times for a brief meeting next week:

https://doodle.com/meeting/participate/id/aKQGYgld

The purpose of the meeting will be to:

- identify OPAC interfaces to be evaluated
- identify potential providers of accessibility conformance reports to
request proposals and pricing from
- plan next steps towards making a recommendation to the project board for
proceeding with the accessibility evaluation

Please note that since the Evergreen Project has budgeted for paying for
such a report (although would be very happy to consider a proposal to
donate services to create it), if your organization might be interested in
providing such services, you should consider skipping the planning meeting
in the interest of avoiding a potential conflict of interest. However,
please feel free to let me or Katie Greenlef-Martin know if your
organization may be interested in providing a proposal.

Regards,

Galen

[Jgeneral] Report of J Wiki Meeting of 2023-07-13

2023-07-19 Thread 'robert therriault' via General
== Report of Meeting 2023-07-13 ==

Present: Art Anger, Ed Gottsman, Dave Lambert and Bob Therriault

Full transcripts of this meeting are now available on the its wiki page.
https://code.jsoftware.com/wiki/Wiki/Report_of_Meeting_2023-07-13

1) Bob reported that the J primer revamping is complete for the first section.
Revamped pages can be identified by an index of pages below the content.
https://code.jsoftware.com/wiki/Help/Primer/001Start_here Revamping the
dictionary page involved substituting NuVoc as the current J reference instead
of the J dictionary.

2) Ed told the story of his laptop's fatal interaction with pure Irish grain
fed butter. Then there was a brief demo of the new interface of the J browser
which is less hover based. Ed indicated that he was looking forward to hearing
Stephen's reaction to it, as he feels it is 90% of the way to completion and
may require a round of beta testing to finish off the rough edges involving
interactions with different platforms. Graying out information that is not
directly selected was suggested as a way to provide information pertinent to
the search.

3) Bob draws a distinction between navigation by categorization,
https://code.jsoftware.com/wiki/Special:CategoryTree?target=Category%3AHome=categories==Special%3ACategoryTree
 which is what the original plan had been and navigation by interface, which is
what Ed is providing. Ed pointed out that his interface relies on goo
categorization as well, so it is more both than one or the other.

4) Dave spoke for a bit about challenges that his Unix box was facing in
running the browser and he will provide Ed with details as soon as he has had a
better chance to investigate.

5) Art thought that the new browser showed a lot of progress.

6) Bob talked about developing the Newcomers section
https://code.jsoftware.com/wiki/Category:Newcomers_N a bit more before
switching to the new format. Finishing off the J Primer and providing an easier
introduction to the information in NuVoc. The complete information would still
be available through the Reference subtree.
https://code.jsoftware.com/wiki/Category:Reference_R  The Newcomers section may
have more prominence by being near the top of the category section with Search
and Bookmarks. Ed thought that more WD information could be positioned more
prominently in the Developers section

7) Ed also talked about the benefits of the bookmarking section which would
allow the user to easily customize the information by selecting links that they
personally found most useful.

For access to previous meeting reports

If you would like to participate in the development of the J wiki please

The repository is here:

Be aware that to be allowed to pen an issue you need to be registered to GitHub
and connected to your account (signed in, in GitHub parlance). If that is not
the case clicking will bring up a button allowing you to sign up.

Re: Console E-mail client for my need

2023-07-19 Thread Linux for blind general discussion

Good day,
I have alpine working through gmail and on my work setup, I got it working
using oauth2.

For the oauth2 setup you need the latest version 2.26 to work.
The gmail setup was easier, but I had to jump through a few hoops for both
to work.

Once done, both works fine though.

Thanks all for answering. As for Alpine, earlier today I stumbled upon a dead

wizard to help set up the program. The only potential disadvantage is it
appears to have a single guy maintaining it, but since e-mail related
protocols don't change much over time, then there won't probably be a need to

AERC seems a good client, but the developer claims it is still experimental

Re: Console E-mail client for my need

2023-07-18 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
Thanks all for answering. As for Alpine, earlier today I stumbled upon a
dead URL which was suposed to be its official web page, but now I went
to Gentoo package database and there is a reference to an active page at
alpineapp.email, so It's still alive. Seems a good option indeed, as it
has a wizard to help set up the program. The only potential disadvantage
is it appears to have a single guy maintaining it, but since e-mail
related protocols don't change much over time, then there won't probably
be a need to upgrade my e-mail client as well.

AERC seems a good client, but the developer claims it is still
experimental or at least work in progress. NMH seems stable, but
strangely it wasn't yet packaged for Gentoo...

Lets see. thanks all again,
Cleverson

Well Cleversom, are their reasons you didn't consider Alpine? Alpine is quite
configurable-and-you can run an alternative editor such as NANO. Alpine works
really well with Speakup, but I wish I didn't have to hear an opeening

Console E-mail client for my need

2023-07-18 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
Hi, I'm setting up an environment on my new Gentoo installation. I'm
thinking of setting up an e-mail client at the console rather than a
desktop client like Thunderbird, because console programs tend to be
more performant and stable. On the other hand, I prefer text reading on
desktop programs, as there are more convenient commands, e.g. the famous
continuous reading command found in Orca. Thus, I thought of choosing a
console client that allows me to open a text editor like leafpad to read
plain text e-mail messages, and open a browser like Firefox to read html
messages.

Upon searching, there appears to be only a few console clients still
maintained, namely Mutt, neoMutt and sup. Sup is curses based, but
NeoMutt seems the most active, though it probably requires a lot of time
and patience to configure properly, as it doesn't have any interactive
settings wizard; one needs to carefully read and change files manually.

Can someone say if it's worth trying? If so, what screen reader works
better with it: fenrir, orca or speakup? Am I missing any other good client?

Thanks,
Cleverson

Re: Fixing a corrupted partition table using orca?

2023-07-18 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
    If you have a live CD or bootable USB stick, you should be able to
bring up ORCA.  Then open a terminal and try using 'fdisk' or some of
the Linux command line utilities.  This assumes that your BIOS is set to
check for booting from a USB device first.  If it isn't, you probably
need someone to help you change that setting.

So yes it might be possible, but it requires some knowledge.

We're working through suggestions from our annual staff survey. One was to be
able to capture/store patron photos in Evergreen. I looked on LaunchPad and
didn't see this as a wishlist request so I assume this has been considered but
decided against because of patron privacy concerns? (I'm aware that you can
link to external photos.)

I thought I'd check if this was something that was a design decision.

After a long time, I encountered this problem again.

Could you add the following to the example to the man page:
```txt
Show the current date and time using a custom format
$ date "+%Y-%m-%d %H:%M"
```

Feel free to edit wording.

Gi Howard,
if you worked with DOS, then you know what a console aka terminal is: You
worked on it.
The DOS user interface was completely text only screen aka display as output
and a keyboard as input.

The successful graphical user interface made of pixels aka dots of color called
Windows was based on
DOS, which could be opend up always by pressing Winkey+c. Then a DOS box was
painted by pixels.

maybe console mode is when you are commanding the operating system directly?
Then, how does console

Re: Slint for beginners?

2023-07-13 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
Hi Howard,

in console or text mode the screen the whole screen is used to display the
commands typed by the user or the output from the computer in response to these
commands.

These commands are inputs of a program, which can be a shell (interface between
the user and the operating system as a whole) or an application (program written
to execute a specific task)

In a graphical environment the screen is shared by several software components
represented by graphical (most rectangular) areas (called for instance panels,
windows, icons) which the user can access with a mouse or key bindings.

What can be confusing is that the word terminal can designate either a console,
or in a graphical environment a window associated with a shell in which the user
can type commands and get output from the shell itself or an application.

Practically for a blind Linux user a console is accessible with speech through a
screen reader like espeakup, speechd-up or fenrir whereas in a graphical
environment the Orca application is used, which can also say what is typed and
the output but also describe the content of a window.

As an illustration you may want to read:
https://slint.fr/en/HandBook.html#_the_graphical_environments

and consult some definitions in the associated glossary:
https://slint.fr/en/HandBook.html#_glossary

In many cases, this means you operate on the command line not in a
graphical environment. The console or command line mode really is where
all of the linux power tools become available and whenever the graphical
interface environment does anything useful it has to reach into the
command line environment to get it done.

Re: Slint for beginners?

It's always been a puzzle to me:  What is meant by console or console
mode?  I've heard that term for many years; just never knew what it was
or is?  Thanks for any explanation or description.

Re: Slint for beginners?

2023-07-12 Thread Linux for blind general discussion
Good evening Jessica,

Caveat: answer from the Slint maintainer ;)

I sincerely hope it is a good distribution for a Linux beginner.

A least the installer should be easy to use (and is fully accessible with speech
and Braille, as the installed system).

Then few configuration post installation is necessary. Some basic knowledge of
the command line is useful, but is not a requirement to begin using Slint.

To make your opinion I suggest that you have a look to our HandBook:
https://slint.fr/en/HandBook.html#_about_slint

More information in the website: https://slint.fr/en/home.html

You can install it on a 64 USB stick to try it. As a beginner I suggest that you
choose the "auto" installation mode.

I recommend that you register to our mailing list for further questions and
support request as indicated in https://slint.fr/en/support.html

Cheers,
Didier Spaier

Have you considered placing all of the valuable hardware behind an

The good ones can be controlled by a Linux system, and should log events
such as power line voltages that are above or below reasonable limits.
Of course, they protect connected devices against these fluctuations by
switching to a battery. Complete loss of power is also protected against

I don't know who manufactures the high-quality UPS devices these days or

Re: GNU coreutils' `join` behaves differently on macOS versus Linux?

2023-07-11 Thread Robert Leach via GNU coreutils General Discussion
Thanks! That is very helpful in that it confirms my sanity. I didn't know
about the locale stuff.

I have more info, as yesterday, I'd worked on getting around this issue (but
hadn't found a complete solution yet). I have it all working consistently now.
 There are some interesting things I noted that may help explain things, since
it *may*(?) not be entirely attributable to the sort strategies...

- It seemed as if the sort error was fatal on linux, as it never output
anything, though when I added `set euxo pipefail`, join on both systems output
nothing - and join on both systems exited non-zero (according to the command
echo output).
- Adding `--nocheck-order` then allowed both OS's join to generate output and
exit successfully, but the output on linux unexpectedly included the comment at
the top of the file (which wasn't included in the macOS output, and caused
problems downstream of the join command).

Then once I added a `grep -v "#"` to the input files that join consumed, join
on both systems started generating the same output.

The upstream command (featureCounts) was reliably generating the same order
output with the same number of lines, so we didn't really need the order check,
otherwise, I would have added the locale setting you suggested - but it's
definitely good to know.

As a sample, here is the top of one of the input files that was going into the
join command, and all input files only differed by column 7:

```
# Program:featureCounts v2.0.6; Command:"featureCounts" "-p" "-T" "4" "-g"
 This is an EXTERNAL email. Exercise caution. DO NOT open attachments or
click links from unknown senders or unexpected email.
I've been unable to make a empty call # for a while now. Not an error message,
just takes me right to the item edit screen, so I have to create a whole fake
item when I need to transfer the item to a different marc record.
I suggested they try clearing their cache, but this did not resolve the issue.
I cannot recreate the issue myself.  Has anyone encountered an issue like this
might have an idea of how to resolve this issue.
GNU coreutils' `join` behaves differently on macOS versus Linux?
2023-07-10 Thread Robert Leach via GNU coreutils General Discussion
Hi,
I wanted to ask about the `join` utility in `coreutils` 9.3.  I'm building a
snakemake workflow and am debugginbg an error that only occurs when the
workflow is run on a linux system.  I have narrowed the difference down to the
`join` utility provided by the `coreutils` conda package.  An error is produced
on both systems, but since my script had not set `set -euxo pipefail`, the
error was silent.  On linux, this produced an error in the workflow rule that
executes after the one that uses the join utility, because the input file was
Is this a bug in either the macOS or linux versions of the coreutils join
due to many scheduling conflicts.
I hope everyone is enjoying the summer and finding a little quiet time here
and there.
I look forward to seeing you in August!
Best,
Jennifer
