------- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Jul 20 14:55:48 -0700 2005 ------- Currently inserting an equation takes many steps, and placing equations properly in text is difficult. I think a big improvement would be to allow the direct conversion of text into an inline equation. The steps would be: 1. Write some text in, say, a list. Among the writted text is markup for an equation. 2. Highlight the equation markup 3. Execute, either from the menus or from a keyboard shortcut, a "Convert to Equation" command. The result should be an in-line equation, embedded properly at the correct position in the text, with a size, color, etc. appropriate for the current text style. A few of us have been trying to prepare equation-heavy presentations using Impress, and we think it's very close to being easily usable. The equations look good, and the command set is so close to latex that it is easy for people to learn. The only impediment is that entering equations currently takes far too many key/mouse strokes compared to TeX, in which only dollar signs ($) on either side of an equation are necessary. Allowing conversion of highlighted text into an inline equation would significantly reduce the amount of work necessary to produce equation-heavy slides. (Sorry if this is a duplicate... I haven't been able to find a similar bug report / RFE.)
