I have used the following formula in a spreadsheet to count the number of cells
that text appears in:

=COUNTIF(A1:A10,"*")

However, when I put text in cells A1 to A10, the COUNTIF function just shows 0
instead of showing a numerical value for the number of cells with text in.

This function works exactly as expected in Microsoft Excel (which is where I
first used it) but not in OpenOffice Calc. Even trying the same spreadsheet in
both gives the correct answer for =COUNTIF(A1:A10,"*") in Excel but 0 in Calc.
