When I intially installed open office in 2006 1.x or 2.x I am unsure the
version, I opted to have the MS Office file types open in Open Office as I at
that time did not believe we would put ms office on the machine. Later in 2008
we installed Ms Office Student and home 2007. Ms office registered its file
types accordingly.

I have since updated open office twice (the second time after uninstalling open
office first to attempt eliminating the registration of ms office types to open
office ). Both times open office registered doc, ppt, xls etc types to open
with open office, even though ms office already had them registered. Both
times I have had to go into explorer and change the open with to ms office. We
have win xp sp 3. I have seen in documentation that open office 3.x is not
supposed to have this behavior when ms office has file types registered. The
version of open office we currently have installed is 3.2.
