Current workaround is similar to evilone's, where I unpack and manually changes the xml everytime I used it, but that gets tedious very quickly. (The document? currently at roughly 100 pages without columns, and that's only quarter of the original OCR'ed. I'm trying to mimic the original typesetting. That's 300 more pages to manually edit the section styles.
