2009 -------
I downloaded OOo_3.1.1_LinuxIntel_install_en-US.tar.gz, extracted the files
using tar, and installed the rpms using "rpm -Uvh *rpm" (as per the installation
instructions at
http://documentation.openoffice.org/setup_guide2/2.x/en/SETUP_GUIDE_A4.pdf)
which looked good, placing the files in /opt/openoffice.org3.
When I start calc using /opt/openoffice.org3/program/scalc I immediately get a
popup stating "Missing vcl resource. This indicates that files vital to
localization are missing." and then "The program cannot be started. Language
could not be determined." I can get past the first message by setting
STAR_RESOURCEPATH=/usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/resource (which isn't the
right version but I couldn't find the equivalent for OO 3.1.1) but then I get a
slightly different popup stating "The program cannot be started. The user
interface language cannot be determined." The same thing happens if I simply
run "soffice" or "soffice -calc". Inserting /opt/openoffice.org3/program at the
start of the PATH doesn't help.
(I'm using CentOS 5.2, so /usr/lib/openoffice.org is already installed.)
