Msoni has made a great point that there is a lack of templates throughout
Impress. I have reproduced this bug in version 3.4 of OpenOffice and found this
bug still exists not only in Impress but also throughout OpenOffice. The steps
I
took in Impress were:

(1) In Windows, Click Start and navigate to the OpenOffice folder.
(2) Open Impress
(3) You are prompted with the “Presentation Wizard”, select “From Template”.
(4) A new drop down appears, select “Presentations”
(5) You are given two presentation template options by default.
(6) I then changed the drop down to “Presentation Backgrounds”.
(7) You are given twenty five background options by default.

I have attempted the same steps in PowerPoint and noticed by default there are
ten presentation templates if you do not have internet access to retrieve the
Office Online templates. If you do have internet access you can download a
seemingly endless number of additional presentation templates. I have then
looked at the default themes (MS Office version of OO’s “Presentation
Backgrounds”) and noticed by default there were 39 options and again, a
seemingly endless number of online themes to download for free.

It is obvious that OpenOffice has already put the time and effort into
developing a template/theme interface to Impress, why not allow the community
to
share their own templates and allow users to easily download them from within
the application rather than needing to find an external site that they may not
trust?

I have had less success throughout the other applications in the OpenOffice
suite. I would expect that Writer would provide an option to use a number of
default templates as well but it was not obvious how to retrieve them. In
Impress you just need to go to File -> New Presentation and you are asked which
template you would like to use. In Writer I have finally found a way to access
the online template library but it was not obvious how to get there. I went to
File -> New -> Templates and Documents and found a link to “Get more templates
online”. It surprised me to find this link here, I wish I saw that when I was
choosing a template in Impress because there are presentation templates in the
library. Also, by going to File-> New-> Templates and Documents I expected that
I would be creating a new template, not given the option to go to the online
template library.

I could tell a great deal of work has gone into the template and theming
features of OpenOffice but I only realized that after finding the “Get more
templates online…” link. Before finding that link I didn’t know if there were
any templates available for Writer, Calc, etc.

It would greatly help new users continue using OpenOffice products if these
features were easily available.

Thank you,
Sean Powers
