Just compare the linked screenshot from Evolution

with the left part of the (older, but it' still the same) screenshot
from OpenOffice.org:

In GTK/Gnome the universal means of collapsing/disclosing trees or 
similar widgets is the triangle. It should be the same in OOo. It
is only different "icons"/graphics of the control elements, is it?

Replacing the plus with a triangle would save Gnome users learning
yet another metaphor.
