------- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Feb 23 07:07:13 -0800
2005 -------
1. When âmatch caseâ is not checked, Ä and i and I and Ä are all replaced,
regardless of which charcater one is searching for.

a. Ä and i are not the same character and both should not be replaced when
searching for Ä (and âmatch caseâ is not checked); Ä and I should be
replaced.
(In this case, it is clear there is a âTurkish contextâ to the search and
Ä and
I are upper- and lower-case variants of each other. If the language is set to
Turkish from the Format: Character window, this is doubly true, but even in
non-language-defined settings, searching on the non-ASCII form should be
unambiguous.)

b. When searching for Ä (and âmatch caseâ is not checked), Ä and i should
be
replaced. (In this case, it is also clear there is a âTurkish contextâ to
the
search and Ä and i are upper- and lower-case variants of each other. If the
language is set to Turkish from the Format: Character window, this is doubly
true, but even in non-language-defined settings, searching on the non-ASCII form
should be unambiguous.)

c. It is less clear what to do when i or I are searched; this is the only case
in which it seems replacing all four characters might be âvalid.â (Because
i
and I are both âstandard Romanâ and Turkish characters, the âcontextâ
of the
search is unclear. OOo should first check the language of the character and use
language-appropriate rules as suggested in a. and b.; what to do if ânoneâ
has
been selected in the Format: Character window is still unclear.)

2. When âmatch caseâ is checked, only the character searched for is
replaced;
there is no confusion between Ä and i or between I and Ä.

I will attach a Writer document with some example words. Running Mac OS X
10.3.7, but I imagine this is possibly a platform/OS All issue.
