2005 -------
I tested in 1.1.4 and Beta2.0(1.9.82) Calc on a Linux/Debian (Intel) PC.
Filled col. A1 of a new spreadsheet with these strings:
%30
"12
'22
?100
^200
then attempted to find and replace the heading chars with a space so that those
figures could become real numbers.
The chars %, ? and ^ were easily found and replaced in whatever way I searched
for them, i.e. either as glyphs or as hex \x0025, \x003f and \x005e.
There was no way, instead, to trace the remaining glyphs, that is " and '.
Besides the symbols, I used \x0022 for " and \x0027 for ' (and a few other
possible hex chosen from Insert Special Characters table) to no avail.

Of course, the regular expression box was ticked during the search.

Regards,
        Ennio
