Whether this mode is enabled or disabled makes the difference in the sample document provided. It seems the reporter expects that either all or none of the rotated text portions should have vertical mode enabled. That's why there are two kinds of text boxes available in the UI (only if the CJK-UI elements are enabled): vertical mode and standard mode. @od: Format->Chars->Position does not have a control to enable/disable vertical mode. Instead it seems to use a heuristic like bVerticalMode=(rot==270) to do it automatically. That seems to be the problem.
