There are certain Unicode characters in the "Extended Roman" blocks (letter+dot
below, e.g. S [U+1E63] s Z z H h, etc.) which are improperly kerned when they
appear at the beginning of a line and are followed by an ASCII character (it
appears that an extra half or full space has been inserted between them and the
following characters, even though no space character is there to delete.) These
characters are properly kerned if they appear anywhere but as the first
character of a line or if they are followed by another "Extended Roman"
character. This kerning bug only occurs in Writer.

There are a limited number of Mac OS X fonts which support these characters, but
this is not a font bug--it's evident in Lucida Grande as well as third-party
fonts like TITUS Cyberbit Basic, the GNU Free families, SIL's Gentium, and
Everson Mono Unicode and Apple's TextEdit properly kerns these letters in all
circumstances.

Slightly more debugging/technical information in the original bug report in the
NeoOffice Bugzilla at the URL above.
