2005 -------
OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 was able to open MS-Word documents whether or not they had
a .doc extension.  2.0, on the other hand, seems to require the .doc extension.
 You can demonstrate this simply by running "soffice foo.doc" then renaming the
file and running "soffice foo.doc.pl"

This issue came up because we have a document server which is sending word
documents (perhaps incorrectly) with a .cgi or .pl extionsions. The browser
launches OOo as a helper application, and it can no longer open these files. 
This may be the way 2.0 is supposed to work, but it feels like a step backwards
to our users who are seeing things stop working following the installation of 
2.0.
