This method is clearly described in the Help text (and indeed worked well in the OOo-1.X series). If I create a few paragraphs, apply a style, then set a numbering style in that paragraph style, no numbering is shown. The only way I can get paragraph numbering on is to manually turn it on for each paragraph using the "Numbering" icon.
